Medical Respite
WORKS

Medical Respite saves limbs and changes lives! Partnerships with local organizations help patients have access to meals every day, monthly grocery items, and clothes.

In 2024, CBB had 8 rooms available for patient use. 137 patients were referred to Carehouse; 48 were accepted. 24 of these patients did not return to the streets.

The need for medical respite care in Kansas City is growing, and CBB is working to expand capacity. We will never stop offering Compassionate Care for All in Kansas City.

CBB Carehouse

The Carehouse serves as a place of rest and recovery for unhoused patients that are discharged from an area hospital but have ongoing medical needs and need to recover indoors. If discharged back onto the street, these patients would likely have further health complications and/or need to be readmitted back to the hospital with worse health outcomes.

Patients admitted to the Carehouse are given an independent room and do not share rooms with other patients. CBB strives to help patients regain their health and help patients find long-term housing before being discharged.

Each patient is seen weekly by a fully licensed medical provider. Other medical services are then tailored to each patient's needs, including wound care, physical therapy, psychology, and psychiatry.

On-site case managers provide housing-focused case management and supportive services. Staff are very intentional in seeking out housing opportunities for respite patients and help patients access benefits and obtain vital documents necessary for housing.
